Reader + Child!Italy Brothers

More family story stuff. Lovino is in it so a little bit of cursing.
    =======================

You sat on the floor, legs to your chest and back against the wall. You felt horrible, your nose was runny, vision blurry from red eyes, your head hurt and your throat was dry. You had been like this for a few hours at least, but you couldn’t be sure. You were going through one of the many calm periods you’ve had today, you felt that soon the flood gates would break again.

Why did this have to happen? Why? You take a sharp breath and slowly, shakily blow it out through your lips. This all started with a trip to the doctor. You hadn’t felt the best, and you were late this month. Naturally you assumed that your last intimate time with your fiancé impregnated you. You were ecstatic after seeing the positive on the pregnancy test and told the news to your love. He too was thrilled

You had made an appointment with a doctor, and when you were leaving for it, he asked to come along. There the doctor asked for a urine sample to test as well as gave you various pamphlets informing you about the subject of child birth. A few days after that you had a call from the doctor, asking you to see her as soon as possible. Your go ask for the next day off, and go alone this time.

She looked grim this time, causing seeds of worry to plant in your mind. She had informed you that you weren’t pregnant. A pang of disappointment hit you, but it was nothing compared to what happened next. She further explained that you could never be pregnant, you were infertile. Tears sprang to your eyes as she gave you her apologies. She left the room and you broke into a sobbing mess.

Eventually you left the doctor’s office and went home, dreading the return of your fiancé. You told him the news soon after he got home. He lost all emotion in his face and went to the shared room of your house. You followed and were heartbroken to see him packing a suitcase. You pleaded with him to stay, that you could adopt, but he only glared at you. He refused to raise someone else’s child and that there was no point staying with someone who couldn’t give him a family. He pushed you to the side and left. You bawled after hearing his car drive off, leaving you where you were now.

You passed out that night, crying yourself to sleep. You had woken up to your alarm clock buzzing in your bedroom. The thought of dragging yourself to work in this state sickened you. You couldn’t go to work today, not after what just happened; and thankfully your boss was kind, letting you take a personal day without pressing you too much for your reason.

You needed to get out of the house, staying will only make you miserable. Your appearance didn’t matter much to you at the moment. You skipped bathing and only changed your clothes, baggy jeans, a large shirt and hoodie, a random pair of walking shoes, and a hat. You snached your keys, phone and wallet, and out the door you went. You debated on driving around or walking, picking the second after a minute. The shops were within walking distance, and you wouldn’t have to spend your money on more gas.

The sky was grey, looking like it could rain at any minute. You gave a pathetic smile towards the skies, they seemed to be mirroring your emotions. With a heavy sigh you begin to walk down the sidewalks, wondering your way into town. The chatter of people soon surrounded you as well as shops, cafes, and other buildings. It was bittersweet hearing others, both reassuring you of the fact that you aren’t alone in the world and making you feel rather empty inside.

You stuff your hands into your pockets as you trudge along. Anger and sorrow swirling together in your head, starting to blur your eyesight again through a river of tears. What broke you from that negative state was the crying of a child. Wiping your eyes clear, you begin to look around for the source of the sound.

Up ahead walking towards you was a young girl that looked no older than seven. She stared down at her feet as she walked closer, not paying mind to much of anything and letting out sobs. Her dress was simple and in need of being cleaned, the hem of the skirt was wet and walked on. She looked so pitiful, your heart ached to see her in such a state. You get her attention just before she passed you and asked her what was wrong.

“I-I can’t find mio fratello,” she squeaked, “and I’m so hungry.” Her little hands gripped her stomach, trying to silence its growling. All your problems became irrelevant as you saw her dismal form. You offered to buy her a meal, saying that you had forgotten to eat earlier and would like some company, as well as your assistance in locating her brother afterward at least after you asked what fratello meant. She was delighted, and thanked you many times in both English and Italian.

You had taken her into a small restaurant, but the staff tried to shoo her out. She coward behind your legs, and you glare at the staff, telling them that if they are going to be so rude to your guest then you will take your business elsewhere. You take the girls hand and walk out, taking a mental note to never dine there again.

You go into another restaurant, and before they can tell the young girl to leave you tighten your grip of her hand a little and gently pull her closer to you, all while glaring at the staff. They got the message and you took a seat by the window, just in case her brother passed by. As hungry as she was she didn’t seem to like much of anything on the menu. Eventually you talked her into getting some pancakes with eggs and bacon on the side. She asked for a hot chocolate and you didn’t have the heart to tell her no. After your orders had been placed, you started to chat.

“We never properly introduced ourselves,” you start with a small smile, “I’m (Full Name).”

She gave you a bright smile back, “I’m Feliciano Vargas, I’m glad I met you signorina (L. Name).”

Heat rushed to your face. That name sounded too masculine to be a girl’s name. Had you been wrong about this child being a girl? But then why would a boy be wearing a dress? Now it started to bug you, you had to find out. “Feliciano huh? That’s an interesting name. It’s a boy’s name isn’t it?” you ask trying to be subtle.

“Sì,” it cheered, oblivious to what you were hinting at.

Well so much for subtle. You just had to make a guess and face embarrassment if you got it wrong, “A very nice name for a sweet little boy, like yourself.”

“Grazie!” Feliciano cheered once more. Looks like you got it right, thank goodness.

“So Feliciano, what does your brother look like?” you ask as the drink orders came to your table. “And where was the last place you saw him?”

He stopped reaching for his hot chocolate and thought for a second. “Fratello is older than me with darker hair and a grouchy expression on his face most of the time,” He started as he scratched his head of auburn hair. A big smile appeared on his face as he pointed to an odd curl sticking out of the side of his head. “Oh! and he has a curl like me but in a different spot.”

He stopped and pondered the second question, lazily looking out the large window. He had a dull look on his face as he thought but quickly brightened up once again and pointed out the window. “There! He’s right there!” Feliciano joyfully yelled.

Outside on the of the street was a boy matching Feliciano’s description looking around. You ask Feliciano for his brother’s name and to wait here while you go get him. You ran out and cross the empty street. You call out to him by the name his brother gave you. He turned to you, slightly shocked.

“Hey, how the crapolla do you know my name, donna?” he questioned with narrow eyes.

“Your brother Feliciano told me,” you answer with a soft smile. You knelt down closer to his eye level and continue, “He was lost and hungry so I was treating him to breakfast, would you like to join us?”

He huffed and crossed his arms, “Why should I trust you? And besides, I’m not even hungry!” as if on cue, a loud grumble came from his stomach. His hand lowered to clutch it as his face turned red.

“I think your tummy’s saying otherwise,” you giggle some, causing him to blush more and mutter curses under his breath, “And I’m just trying to help you out. I didn’t like seeing your brother crying as he looked for you and I don’t want to offer only him something to eat.”

He reluctantly agreed to your offer, grumbling various things under his breath. He looked rather cute doing so. He refused to hold your hand as you walked back to the restaurant. As you neared your table you saw Feliciano already stuffing his face with food. You smile and take an unused chair from one of the other tables for the grumpy boy to sit down on.

“Lovino!” Feliciano yelled with food half chewed in his mouth as the two of you sat down. “I’m so glad you’re here!”

“Yeah, well you need to stop wandering off!” Lovino shouted back, “Fratello stupido, si potrebbe ottenere nei guai se si fa.[1]”

You couldn’t tell what he said, but it couldn’t have been good from the way it saddened his little brother. Feliciano swallowed his food and whispered, “Mi dispiace Lovino, non volevo dire a vagare fuori.[2]”

Lovino’s glare softened the slightest bit. He huffed and turned away from him, incidentally turning to face you. His stomach growled again. Seeing no waiters around to take a new order, you slide your plate over to him. He opened his mouth to most likely refuse, but ultimately accepted as his stomach begged for food. He ate almost everything on the plate, but he avoided the hash browns like the plague.

“Not going to eat the hash browns?” you ask. He growled a no to you and continued to eat. “Then I guess you won’t mind me eating them.” You used the one of the spoons to scoop off the fried potato mess onto the small plate the hot chocolate came with. Eventually a waiter came by to see how everything was going, you answered it was well and asked for a second hot chocolate for Lovino and a small side for yourself, seeing as you gave your meal to the grumpy boy.

“I never asked’chu for a hot chocolate,” Lovino bluntly said after the waiter left.

“No, but your brother got one, I thought you might like one too,” you reply taking a bite of the spoonful of hash browns.

“What if I was allergic to chocolate or somethin’?” he asked.

“Are you?” you counter, “I’ll drink it instead and get you something else if you like.”

He didn’t answer you, only continue to eat. You only smile softly as you continue to eat and watching the boys do so too. In the short time you’ve known them you gathered enough information to tell that they don’t have any easy life, making the elder’s attitude understandable and the younger’s a rare blessing. When the other drink came to the table, you teasingly reached for it, only to have Lovino guard it like a treasure. You laugh a little, as does Feliciano, which caused Lovino to curse yet again.

You finish the side that you had, and wait for the other. Curiosity about the two begins to dominate your thoughts. Why are they not in school? Where are their parents? Do they even have a place to call home? You didn’t want to upset them, but those are questions that needed to be asked. You couldn’t just let them wander off after you fed them, something bad might happen. You take a deep breath and start with the most obvious, and most difficult one to ask, “Where are your parents?” Both look glum, refusing to make eye contact. Feliciano starts to speak but Lovino orders him not to, claiming that it was none of your business.

You stare intently at the two, but soon give up, asking a different question. “Fine, then do you at least have a home I can take you too after this?” This was met with more silence from the two, telling you without a sound that the answer was no. These boys were truly alone in this world. Your heart ached more, you wanted to help them, to care for them. Even knowing Lovino would decline, you ask if they would like to come home with you.

“No way!” Lovino growled, “I’m not going to go home with some donna that only is doing this out of pity! That’s why we left the orphanage, I can’t stand being pitied! Plus as soon as the couple gets a kid of their own, we become invisibile to them. So why don’t you just cut us out of the equation and have a kid of your own?”

Tears welled in your eyes. You force a smile, but it only served to draw attention to the emotional pain written on your face. Facts pushed away now sprang to the front of your thoughts. You look towards the window, the dark sky turning the glass into a better mirror. You couldn’t look directly at them, as the tears slid down your checks. Lovino looked guilty, not intending for you to cry. Feliciano looked like he was close to tears himself as he stared down at his plate.

“You two are lucky to not be completely alone,” you mumble just loud enough for them to hear you, “I envy that a little, you have family.” You take a breath and let it out. Your voice began to quiver, “I alway wanted a family of my own, and until recently I thought I was on my way to getting that.”

“W-what do you mean, signorina (L. Name)?” Feliciano asked.

“I was engaged, to who I thought would love me no matter what,” you start to answer, “A pregnancy test showed positive, and we were so happy… but it was a false positive, because the doctor told me I’m infertile.”

“What’s that mean?” Lovino asked the edge of spite disappearing from his tone.

“It means that no matter what I do, I can never have a child of my own.” Both boys were shocked, and that only made Lovino regret his words even more. “After I told my fiancé,” you continued, “He stormed out, saying there was no point in staying with me if I couldn’t give him a family of his own.”

Silence overtook the atmosphere. You stared out the window waiting for the boys to leave you with the bill. You focus on the rain now pouring outside as you hear one of the chairs slide away from the table and one of them get down. Little arms quickly wrap around you as a head burrows into your side. “Mi dispiace,” came Lovino’s muffled sob, “I… I didn’t mean to… I didn’t know…!Mi dispiace tanto.” Feliciano got down and ran to your other side. Though was against the wall, he too wrapped his little arms around you and sobbed. Lovino continued to speak, now for the both of them, “W-we’d really like it if you took care of us… You’re the first adult to give a rat’s ass about us since nonno died.”

The tears dried up a little, and a soft smile tugs at your lips. Pushing your chair back with your hips, you got on your knees and pull the the boys into a hug. Both bawled their eyes out, while you comb your fingers through their dark brown and auburn hair. You whispered soothing words to the boys, trying to calm them down. The loud sobs quieted down to strangled hiccups as both boys clung to your clothing for life itself. They were a blessing, a light in your darkest hour. As silly as the idea of fate may seem at times, you couldn’t bring yourself to just write this off as a happy coincidence.

“Come on boys, let’s go home” you whispered to them. A small laugh rumbled in you throat as you added “After I pay for our breakfast, of course.”

The boys looked up at you, tears and snot still on their round faces. Wide smiles tugged at the boys lips and both began to laugh a little as well.
This was like 6+ pages in Google Docs, and that was after I cut it short. Anyways, before writing this I was toying with the idea to use Nyo!Italy and normal Romano, but decided against it. I've also just finished Fable 2 and was thinking about writing something non-reader insert about it. Though a crossover Reader-Insert did cross my mind, and I even had a few characters matched up.

Translations (Google Translate)
[1] Stupid brother, you could get in trouble if you do.
[2] I’m sorry Lovino, I didn’t mean to wander off.
